NSW AFI Awards Announcement
Posted in Red Carpet Events on January 22nd, 2010 by admin – Be the first to commentSimon Westaway and Actress Alexandra Davies at the NSW AFI Awards Announcement in Darling Harbour. Friday 22nd Jan, 2010
Having attended the Announcement of the AFI Awards today and the AFI returning to Sydney, CEO of Screen NSW Tania Chambers agreed with me that Australian content and not just American block buster style movies made in Australia must be part of the programme. Australian’s clearly view our culture through our films, and I was happy she understood the importance of this 21 st century approach to storytelling. And furthering this kind of discussion, I look forward to talking her in the future.

Posted in Images, Red Carpet Events, Underbelly on January 13th, 2010 by admin – Be the first to commentIT was the perfect scene — a casino penthouse, showgirls in beaded bras and plumed headdresses and the haunting strains of The Godfather theme being played on a white grand piano.
It was only fitting, then, that two of the Melbourne underworld’s most notorious gangsters, or at least the actors playing them in a top-rating TV drama, make their debut on the Gold Coast.
Underbelly actors Simon Westaway (who plays underworld kingpin Mick Gatto) and Damian Walshe-Howling (underworld hit man Andrew ‘Benji’ Veniamin) were yesterday introduced to the media at Jupiters casino.
The explosive Channel Nine drama, the number one rating program on the Gold Coast, has given birth to a resurgence of interest in Australian-made drama after a long, dry spell.
Walshe-Howling, whose character Benji sports distinct tribal tattoos, thick, silver earrings and a shaven head, was more subdued in dress yesterday but nonetheless drew female eyes.
Oblivious of the attention, Walshe-Howling said playing real people carried with it great responsibility.
“A real person, even one who is dead, has family and friends who are all alive,” he said.

Tasmanian Wilderness Trip 09
Posted in Simon Westaway's Daily Blurb on January 13th, 2010 by admin – Be the first to commentMinister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, Peter Garrett today used emergency provisions under national environment law to include the Tarkine in the National Heritage List. This is a significant milestone in the campaign to protect the Tarkine, and now ensures that the Tarkine Road and any future development…s will now have to be assessed against the National Heritage Listing. The boundary of the 447,000 hectare listing follows the boundary for the proposed Tarkine National Park. The fight goes on. The Tarkine Road still is not defeated, and the long term aim of a Tarkine National Park and World Heritage Area will require us to continue the campaign to ensure protection of this special place. But tonight I think everyone who has supported the campaign can enjoy an ale or a glass of wine, and toast a great day for the Tarkine.
